WEATHER: 'March' into May

A tough to break down weather pattern will keep temperatures feeling like earlier March conditions – rather than later spring May warm weather.

This cool and somewhat sunny weather pattern will emerge as we roll through the remainder of the week.

Look for high temperatures to slowly move into the low 70s today – much below our typical highs in the upper 70s – as north easterly flow keeps conditions cool.

High pressure flues those northeasterly winds and continues to advance southward as the trough that brought the shower activity will get nudged toward the coast of Florida.

For folks around Wilmington that means we will see improving conditions – less rain – and continued cool weather into the weekend.

Columbus County town host state’s oldest agricultural festival

This weekend, the town will host their 81st Strawberry Festival, the oldest continuing agricultural festival in North Carolina.

CHADBOURN, NC (WECT) - Just about every spring weekend, you can find at least two or three festivals taking place in Southeastern North Carolina and this weekend is no exception.

In Burgaw, the annual Pender County Spring Festival takes place Saturday around the historic Pender County Courthouse; and Lake Fest will be held Saturday in Wilmington at Greenfield Lake.

In Chadbourn, it is time for strawberries to be honored. This weekend, the town will host their 81st Strawberry Festival, the oldest continuing agricultural festival in North Carolina - and the town is ready.

All thru Chadbourn, you'll find homes decorated with strawberry emblems, and many of those homeowners participate in the festival, because volunteers are the ones behind all of the hard work.

WEATHER: Not too shabby - some sun and cooler temps

Somewhat of an unsettled weather pattern will continue Tuesday. Yesterday's trough has moved off shore, however it remains close enough to the coast to keep around some small rain chances.

That, and the fact that breaks of sunlight will allow inland locations to warm into the mid to upper 70s, will also allow the sea breeze and some light showers and spot thunderstorms to develop Tuesday afternoon.

High pressure nudges in from the north as we move though Wednesday and Thursday, greatly reducing the rain chances and keeping temperatures cooler.  Highs will run some 5 to 10 degrees below normal for the last week of April.

Living healthy: event promotes living a healthy lifestyle

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Columbus County School system will host a health fair this weekend in an effort to educate people on the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle.

Columbus county has been named the unhealthiest county in the state of North Carolina, and school officials hope this fair will help bring awareness to that fact.

The goal of the event is to educate our residents in the awareness of multiple factors that affect health, including but not limited to, access to care, smoking, environmental factors, and socio·economic factors.

The fair will offer health screenings, blood pressure checks and education.

The event will be held May 1, 2013 at South Columbus High School from 1:30-5:00 p.m.
