Man faces 3 decades in jail for violent crime

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A man from Chadbourn will spend up to three decades in jail followed by five years of supervised release for crimes he committed in Evergreen in 2010.

John Moore was sentenced in court Wednesday. The court "varied upward in imposing the sentence" due Moore's extensive and violent criminal history and the violent acts involving this case.

Based on evidence presented at the trial, Moore broke into an Evergreen, NC home March 1, 2010.

The victim, whose gender is unknown, then arrived at the home with his or her grandchild and parked in the driveway. Leaving the child in the vehicle, he or she approached the residence, where the doorframe had been broken and the door was open.

The victim proceeded to enter the home, where he or she came across Moore. Moore forced the victim to the ground at gunpoint, put a gun to the victim's head and then dragged him or her around the home by the hair.

One person airlifted from car crash in Columbus County

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - One person has been airlifted to the hospital following a crash in Columbus County.

According to Trooper Campbell, a car turned left into a septic tank truck on Highway 905 in the Nakina community.

The car then went into a ditch, hitting a third vehicle. Troopers say the driver of the first car complained of having chest pains and was airlifted to New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Her condition was not immediately known.

She will be charged with failure to yield.

Troopers say the other two drivers were taken to the hospital with minor injuries and released.

Law enforcement deliver 95 charges during 2-week operation

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Several law enforcement agencies joined efforts two consecutive weekends for an ongoing Community Betterment Project.

According to the Fair Bluff Police Department, the goal of the project is to make the streets safer for the citizens of Columbus County and to get violent offenders off the street.

Law enforcement focused efforts on the Town of Fair bluff and the City of Chadbourn for this two week operation that resulted in 95 charges:

Investigators crack largest gun theft incident in Chadbourn history

CHADBOURN, NC (WECT) – Officers with the Chadbourn Police Department say they've solved the largest gun theft crime in the town's history.

Three people were arrested for breaking into a home on Chappin Street last November and taking more than 30 guns, with a value of $41,000.

Police arrested Terrance Flowers, Dashad Maultsby, and Rashee Mason with the help from federal and other local officials.

Investigators say more arrests are forthcoming.

Investigators look into 2 'suspicious' overnight fires

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Officials are investigating two fires that happened early Tuesday morning they're calling "suspicious."

According to Columbus County Fire Marshal Scott Merritt, a couple of mobile homes within 60 feet of each other on Peacock Road near Tabor City burned just before 2 a.m.

Merritt said the owner of the homes rents them out, but recently no one was living in them.

Merritt said there are people of interest in this case. He's working with the Columbus County Sheriff's Office on this case.

Man accused of robbing pizza delivery men charged

Man accused of robbing pizza delivery men charged

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A suspect faces charges in connection to the robberies of four pizza delivery men.

Kenneth Gray Ford, also known as Worm, is accused of robbing men who were delivering pizzas from Papa John’s, Zeko’s and Pizza Hut in February and March, according to a spokesperson with the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office.

He has been charged with four counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon.

Chadbourn and Fair Bluff police create task force to combat violent crime

CHADBOURN/FAIR BLUFF, NC (WECT) - Police in Chadbourn and Fair Bluff say, violent crime between the two towns is on the rise.

"There's a crowd in Chadbourn you might as well say a gang in Chadbourn a gang in Fair Bluff have been fighting at West Columbus High School, fighting at Fair Bluff mostly now we're starting to fighting here as well," said Steven Shaw the police chief in Chadbourn.

Last year, 14 students from both towns were arrested and suspended after fighting at West Columbus High. But now, both chiefs fear violence between their towns is becoming more common.
