COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Southeastern Community College’s Workforce and Community Development Division will offer several continuing education classes and seminars in the coming weeks. To pre-register or for more information, call (910) 642-7141, ext. 296, 397 or 425.

Financial assistance with registration fees and books to gain new employment-related skills may be available through the Workforce Investment Act (WIA), NC Tobacco Trust Fund Commission and other funding sources. To see if they qualify, students should contact the Columbus County Joblink Career Center immediately at (910)642-7141, ext. 261 or by visiting the Center in A-Building on the SCC campus.

Notary Public

Notary Public is a two-day class to be held Tuesday and Thursday, May 15 and 17, 5:30-9:30 p.m., in T Building, room 120. The class covers qualifications and requirements for the office, fees, general powers and limitations, oaths, depositions, and papers notarized in error.  Students are required to have a high school diploma or GED to attend class. A valid picture ID is required at registration. The course fee is $65. The required textbook, "Notary Public Guidebook for NC,” can be purchased on site for $27 plus tax.

Acidified Food Processing and Packaging Certification

Acidified Food Processing and Packaging Certification is a three-day course to be held Wednesday and Thursday, May 16-17, 8 a.m.–5 p.m., and Friday, May 18, 8 a.m.–noon, in T Building, room 122. Participants will learn the technology associated with processing and packaging acidified foods such as pickles, salsa, acidified peppers, etc.  Students must attend all sessions and pass all examinations In order to be certified. The course fee is $65.  Financial assistance may be available through NC Tobacco Trust Fund Commission.

4 Roles of Leadership

4 Roles of Leadership is a free seminar that will be held Thursday, May 17, 1-4 p.m., in T-Building, room 120. The seminar will help attendees identify and develop the four critical abilities of true leaders. Participants will discover how to use these four skills in day-to-day management.

NC Escort Vehicle Operator Re-certification

NC Escort Vehicle Operator Re-certification course will provide certified vehicle escort operators a standardized re-certification training program for the state of North Carolina. The class will be held Saturday, May 19, 8 a.m.–noon, in T-Building, room 122. The course fee is $65. 

Basic Welding

Basic Welding will meet Mondays and Wednesdays, 6-10 p.m., in M-Building, room 134. The $175 registration and $1.25 insurance fees must be paid at the first meeting. This course introduces basic welding and cutting. Emphasis is placed on beads applied with gases, mild steel fillers, electrodes, and the capillary action of solder. Students will have hands-on experience with welding, brazing and soldering processes. Upon completion, students will have the knowledge to sit for various industry-specific certifications.

Basic Welding/Pipefitting

Basic Welding/Pipefitting will meet Wednesdays and Thursdays, 6-10 p.m., in M-Building, room 134. The $175 registration and $1.25 insurance fee must be paid at the first meeting. This course is designed to teach the skills necessary to fit up and weld pipe in particular positions and objects. Both fit up techniques and actual welds will be exercised during this course.
