WHITEVILLE, NC (WECT) - People in two towns in Columbus County still don't have a banking option, but the future success of a new bank in Whiteville could determine if branches will open in Lake waccamaw and Fair Bluff.
The Riegelwood Credit Union will open in Whiteville on Nov. 4, after the BB&T banks in Lake Waccamaw and Fair Bluff closed in August.
County commissioners say they're trying to work with banks already in the county to expand.
"People are really concerned not being overexerted as far as fees, and don't want to spend any unnecessary money," said Bryan Williams, an employee with Riegelwood Federal Credit Union. "So sometimes if a person finds out they can save somewhere else, or something else fix their lifestyle better, that's who they're going to go to."
Riegelwood Federal Credit Union has a branch in Brunswick County, and now two in Columbus County.
