COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Deputies in Columbus County are investigating a case that involves a 1-year-old child being bitten by a dog.

According to officials, a dog tied to a tree bit the child Tuesday afternoon off Yam Lane, just outside of Tabor City.

Detectives were serving a warrant to residents in the area when the child was bitten. They said several neighbors, including the infant, went outside to see what was going on. The child went too close to the dog that was tied up and was bitten.

According to authorities, the 1-year-old is expected to recover from his injuries.

The dog's owner was issued a citation for not having the animal's shots up-to-date. Deputies are still investigating the case to determine if other charges will be filed.

It is unclear what breed the dog is, but officials said it was mixed.

The dog will be held at the animal shelter for ten days for observations and rabies test and will then be returned to the owner.
