SCC and State Employees’ Credit Union sponsor Camp Biz Kid$

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Southeastern Community College will partner with the Whiteville branch of the State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) this summer to offer free financial literacy camps to rising eighth graders at three local schools.

The camps will meet Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m., on the following dates: June 24 – 27 at Tabor City Middle School; July 15 – 18 at Central Middle School ;  and August 5 – 8 at Chadbourn Middle School.

Lunch will be provided daily. Enrollment is limited to 20 students per camp. Attendees must be participants in SCC’s Educational Talent Search Program.

Seniors learn ways to stay safe and healthy during annual event

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The 30th annual Columbus County senior picnic took place at the fairgrounds Tuesday.

The event is organized by the county’s Department of Aging.

Seniors say they enjoy the event because they see people who live in other parts of the county they haven’t seen in years.

The sheriff’s office and healthcare agencies have booths set up to inform seniors how to stay safe and healthy.

SCC to kick off ‘String Band Fridays’ event May 17

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Southeastern Community College will kickoff its “String Band Fridays” summer concert series on May 17 with performances by The Waymen and Houndog and Friends. The acts will perform 7-9 p.m. in the College’s Auditorium. Admission is free of charge.

The Waymen have been on the music scene in Columbus County for eight years.

Richard Gore, Forrest Riggs, and Gene Wayman are known for their acoustic "feel good" music.

Columbus Co. Farmers Market opening for season soon

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Columbus County Community Farmers Market will be opening for the season soon, according to a farmers market spokesperson.

Beginning 7 a.m. May 11, the market will be open to the public, and this year, there are some new and extended hours. Tuesday and Saturdays, it will be open from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Thursdays from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.

On the opening day, there will be a ceremony that includes a flag raising by local Boy Scout troops and a performance by the Edgewood Elementary School Chorus at 10 a.m.

SCC accepting applications for Summer Allied Health Camp

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - This summer, rising ninth and tenth graders with an interest in pursuing a career in allied health are encouraged to apply for enrollment in Camp Disaster, a four-day camp offering hands-on opportunities in medical laboratory technology, pharmacy, nursing simulation laboratory, CPR and first-aid training at Southeastern Community College.

The camp will meet Monday, July 8, through Thursday, July11, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a light breakfast and lunch to be provided daily.

The goal of this training is to develop an interest in health careers, foster this interest, and prepare the students to succeed when they enroll in a health career program and subsequently work in an allied health career.

FAIR BLUFF, NC (WECT) – Fair Bluff United Methodist Church will host its first annual 5K run and Canoe Race, benefitting Juvenile Diabetes and Christian Ministries on Saturday, May 18 .

This event is located at the Fair Bluff Riverwalk and stage.
