COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Students planning to attend summer session at Southeastern Community College are encouraged to apply for a Golden LEAF Foundation scholarship to help defray tuition, registration fees and related expenses. The application deadline for curriculum students is June 4.
The Golden LEAF Scholars Program awarded a total of $8,806 to 14 curriculum SCC students during the 2011-12 school year. Sixteen continuing education students received $3,017 in scholarships.
The Foundation administers half of North Carolina's share of the Master Settlement Agreement with cigarette manufacturers. The Golden LEAF Foundation uses the funds for projects with the most potential for bolstering North Carolina's long-term economy, especially in tobacco-dependent, economically distressed, and/or rural communities.
“Most of our students were affected by the reduced production of tobacco, either personally or through their parents or grandparents,” said Glenn Hanson, SCC director of financial aid. “The Golden LEAF Foundation scholarship makes college possible for students who otherwise may be unable to attend.”
To be eligible to receive a Golden LEAF scholarship, a student must be a permanent resident of one of the 78 eligible counties, which include Bladen, Columbus and Robeson, and show financial need. Finalists meeting all the eligibility criteria will undergo a separate merit competition where selection is based on factors including the effect of the declining economy on their families, their academic records, leadership and community service.
For more information about the scholarship requirements and the application process, contact the SCC Financial Aid Office at (910) 642-7141, ext. 214.
