COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Town officials in Fair Bluff had basketball goals, at a popular basketball court, taken down Thursday morning.
The Columbus County Parks and Recreation Department put the goals up a couple of weeks ago. Police say the goals were attracting large crowds.
Mayor Randy Britt tells us this is the second time in about four months the goals have been put up then taken down.
Britt believes large crowds are forming because people in other communities are coming here playing ball. Britt says he believes the new police staff is making a difference and more people in the community are coming forward informing police on what's going on.
He believes in the past crime in Fair Bluff didn't make headlines because it wasn't being enforced the way it probably should have been.
Now that it's being enforced the town is making news, but Britt tells us the town doesn't have any more crime than other municipalities.
Police Chief Justin Hewett is working on ordinances to present to town council regarding how to keep crowds from forming.
According to Fair Bluff police, just before 6:30 p.m. Tuesday a large crowd of more than 70 people gathered near Main and Hamer Streets.
Police say they went to break up the crowd when someone fired shots. Officers say the crowd appeared to be leaving the basketball courts.
Police believe there was probably going to be a fight until they showed up. Police say someone fired shots at them last month as well.
