Managing beavers with a bounty program

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Beaver Management Committee was formed this year in response to the growing problem associated with too many beavers in Columbus County.

The committee will go before county commissioners Monday night to ask for permission to set up a beaver bounty pilot program.

The committee is asking that any licensed trapper or landowner that removes a beaver from their property receive a $30 for each beaver.

Each individual will only be allowed to trap 10 beavers, with a maximum of 500 countywide.

Even with the drought impacting Columbus County, flooding has been an issue for many residents due to the overflow of water that is caused from beaver dams.

Columbus County Commissioners will hear the proposal at their meeting Monday at 6 p.m.
