SCC offers continuing education training

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Southeastern Community College’s Workforce and Community Development Division will offer continuing education training in the coming weeks. To pre-register or for more information, call (910) 642-7141, ext. 296, 397 or 425.

Financial assistance with registration fees and books to gain new employment-related skills may be available through the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) and other funding sources.  To see if they qualify, students should contact the Columbus County JobLink Career Center immediately at (910)642-7141, ext. 261 or by visiting the Center in A-Building on the SCC campus.

SCC to kick off ‘String Band Fridays’ event May 17

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Southeastern Community College will kickoff its “String Band Fridays” summer concert series on May 17 with performances by The Waymen and Houndog and Friends. The acts will perform 7-9 p.m. in the College’s Auditorium. Admission is free of charge.

The Waymen have been on the music scene in Columbus County for eight years.

Richard Gore, Forrest Riggs, and Gene Wayman are known for their acoustic "feel good" music.

SCC chamber choir performs spring concert

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The Southeastern Community College Chamber Choir performed in concert on Tuesday, April 30 in the College’s Auditorium.

It was the choir’s first concert under the direction of Xavier Cartrette, Southeastern’s new voice instructor.

Altos were: Lori Dobbs, Aimee Lessard, and Jeannie Ulrich. Basses were: Melvin Charles and Jesse Nicholson.

Sopranos were: Lily Barfield, LeAnn Shooter, and Dr. Sharyn Edwards. Tenors were: Jesse McBride and Roman Grainger.

Chadbourn celebrates National Day of Prayer

CHADBOURN, NC (WECT) -  Thursday, instead of spending the lunch hour eating some people in Chadbourn joined others across around by praying.

The town joined others by having a National Day of Prayer. The Chadbourn Middle School choir performed several songs. 

Religious leaders who spoke at the event discussed praying for the high divorce rate and violence in schools across the country.   

National Day of Prayer started in 1952 after a bill was signed by President Harry Truman.

SCC accepting applications for Summer Allied Health Camp

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - This summer, rising ninth and tenth graders with an interest in pursuing a career in allied health are encouraged to apply for enrollment in Camp Disaster, a four-day camp offering hands-on opportunities in medical laboratory technology, pharmacy, nursing simulation laboratory, CPR and first-aid training at Southeastern Community College.

The camp will meet Monday, July 8, through Thursday, July11, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a light breakfast and lunch to be provided daily.

The goal of this training is to develop an interest in health careers, foster this interest, and prepare the students to succeed when they enroll in a health career program and subsequently work in an allied health career.
