Lanes narrow on Hwy 701 from Tabor City to Whiteville

TABOR CITY AND WHITEVILLE, NC (WECT) - North Carolina DOT will narrow lanes on U.S. Highway 701 between Tabor City and Whiteville as crews pave new asphalt along the road.

According to the press release, crews will pave the highway in sections starting from the north side of Tabor City moving towards Whiteville.  Flaggers will be on site to direct traffic through the work zone.

This project includes paving, shoulder building, new pavement markings and is expected to be completed by May 10.

DOT asks drivers to add extra time to your commute.

Sidney-Cherry Road will be closed until August

FAIR BLUFF, NC (WECT) – On Monday, April, 15, DOT crews will close Sidney Cherry Road near NC 904 to drivers so crews can remove and replace a bridge on the road.

According to the press release, drivers are advised to take Cherry Grove Road, to Peanut Worley Road, then Eliza Butler Road.

Drivers are advised to add extra time to their commute.

The road is expected to re-open in August.

A Portion of U.S. 74/76 to close this weekend in Columbus County

WHITEVILLE, NC (WECT) - The N.C. Department of Transportation will close a portion of U.S. 74/76 heading East at Livingston Creek near Delco on Friday, April 5 at 6pm through Monday, April 8 at 6 a.m.

This closure is necessary so crews can repair the bridge on U.S.74/76 East.

According to N.C. Department of Transportation website, all East bound traffic will follow a six mile detour using N.C. 11 North, then right onto NC 87 South which will take drivers back to U.S. 74/76. Drivers need to add extra time to their commute.

This will closure will not affect drivers traveling from Wilmington to Lumberton.

16 bridges in Columbus Co. to be replaced

16 bridges in Columbus Co. to be replaced

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Sixteen bridges in Columbus County will be replaced within the next three years.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation has awarded E.S. Wagner Co., LLC, a South Carolina-based company, a $11.6 million contract to do the job, according to a news release from an NCDOT spokesperson.

Work can begin as early as April 1 and should be finished by Nov. 2016.

The following bridges and culverts will be replaced:

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - According to a press release, the North Carolina DOT is temporarily closing a section of U.S. 74/76 East at Livingston Creek between Freeman and Delco in Columbus County on Friday, March 22 at 6 p.m. through Monday, March 25 at 8 a.m., weather permitting.

The closure is necessary to repair the bridge approach on U.S. 74/76 East. Workers will remove the dirt and replace it with concrete and repave the road on the bridge.

Drivers traveling U.S. 74/76 East will take the six-mile signed detour route: N.C. 11 North to N.C. 87 South back to U.S. 74/76.

Drivers traveling U.S. 74/76 West from Wilmington to Lumberton will not be affected by the closure.

Sheriff's office presenting program aimed to deter reckless driving

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The Columbus County Sheriff's Office will be teaming up with local schools and agencies soon to present a program aimed to warn students and parents of reckless driving.

According to a news release from the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office, the program will be presented during the week of March 25, at both West Columbus High School and South Columbus High School.

Authorities say teen drivers are being injured at an alarming rate, and something needs to be done.

FAIR BLUFF, NC (WECT) - Be alert if you’re traveling in Fair Bluff for the next three months.

NC 904 between Small Road and Hinsons Crossroads will be closed. Crews with the North Carolina DOT are replacing a bridge on the road.

A detour will be in place. Plan for delays,add a few extra minutes to your commute.

The road is expected to re-open May 24.
